John F. Steiner is Professor of Management at California State University, Los Angeles. He received his B.S. from Southern Oregon State College and received an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Arizona. He has coauthored two other books with George A. Steiner, Issues in Business and Society, and Casebook for Business, Government, and Society. He is also the author of Industry, Society, and Change: A Casebook. Professor Steiner is a former chair of the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management and former chair of the Department of Management at California State University, Los Angeles.

Can only install on one device!

Do not purchase the e-book version of this book unless you only need it on one device.
I have multiple devices that I keep my books on so I have access to them wherever I am at.
This book will only install on 1 device at a time, and no, you cannot even read it on the kindle cloud if it is installed on anything else.

Don't worry though, you have the option to purchase the book again for another device!

Wow! Everyone should read this book

This was probably my favorite book in the MBA curriculum. Fascinating reading with relevant historical information that broadens the readers view of Business, Government, and Society's roles in acheiving change. Each chapter ends with an interesting case study that calls on the reader to expand their natural thought process. Each week my class discussed one of the cases, which inevitably led to heated debates. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in societal issues and government.

Do not get on Kindle

Waste of money getting this on Kindle. I can't read it on my Kindle, my Kindle for iPhone, or online at cloud.kindle.com on my PC! The book only works on my Kindle for iPad (probably, I would hope the Kindle Fire too but I dont have one to test). The landscape and usability is horrid.

Aside from that the book is easy to read, quite biased, but who isn't expecting that when getting a text book these days.

Excellent information

PMC is a superb little book, filled with premium ideas. For those with some knowledge of NLP, Ericksonian techniques, and other forms of covert hypnotic induction this book will fill in many gaps.

However, its primary topic is not for the faint of heart.

It is a pity that a book as good as PMC did not receive the quality of editing that it deserves. It is replete with typos and misspelled words. Also, its font/type is rather large with overly generous spacing - which is common among books of this kind (many of Richard Bandler's books suffer from the same issues). If the book was better crafted in respect to its layout, font size, and was edited for grammar/spelling/et cetera I would give it five stars.

Regardless, the knowledge contained in PMC is of a high quality. Purchase it if you get the chance. It will go very well in concert with The Art of Seduction by Robert Greene, and other books of that nature.

Create your own cult

This books title may be somewhat deceiving. The text is typed very large as if to simply fill the pages. It simply did not fit all together. The author gives many tips on creating a cult of followers and becoming a guru. The basic part after qualifying candidates is to use Ericksonian based hypnosis on them. If you aren't a hypnotist I would steer clear of this title. It was an interesting read but not practical to use to influence most people.

Fascinating and frightening

I bought this book as a recent graduate from a hypnosis course. I had been told that no one had ever been harmed by hypnosis, and that you can't use hypnosis to gain control over someone. I doubted this dogma, and set out to read about the "dark side" of hypnosis and NLP, so that I can have a more complete knowledge of the possibilities and pitfalls in the field.

I was surprised to find explicit instructions for creating a cult of sex slaves. It is written as ethically as one could write with this subject in mind, with explicit instructions to keep them happy and healthy, stay within the law, avoid power trips, accept feedback from an "insubordinate" (compared with a court jester), etc. Nonetheless, I am glad that I did not meet the author in a younger and less secure stage of my life. I think that real harm could be done with some of the processes in this book. One would need good ethics and self-control, as well as a strong background in hypnosis and NLP, to use these techniques successfully. And, a person with good ethics, wouldn't. I strongly suspect that one could create multiple personality disorder in their subject, as only one example of how things could backfire badly.

That said, the first two hypnotic scripts, regarding self-esteem and learning to create joy and comfort from within, are well-written, totally ethical, and I would not hesitate to use them. After that, hypnotic suggestions that the subject will enjoy making the hypnotist happy, enjoy bondage, etc., do not fit within my ethical system or the ethical system of any other professional hypnotist.

If you want to create a cult, keep yourself out of trouble and don't even think about reading this book. There are too many pitfalls that you won't be prepared for, both for yourself and others. If you want a perspective on mind control, it is an interesting read.

Great look at humanity. Puts things in perspective.

Having majored in sociology and anthropology years ago, it had been a while since I had read a book on the topic of tribes. I will say what I found most interesting about this book was the unique perspective the book had on taking a look at not only how tribes exist today, but how they exist within a leadership position. The book was well worth its purchase to provide a very interesting point of view on the topic. Highly recommended!

I loved this analogy!

Being a leader can be hard and bringing a group of people together to work as a singular unit is a very difficult task! I loved the analogy that Berthold gives of a team representing a tribe in his book Tribal Leadership! The steps Berthold lays out to achieve tribal leadership are very clear and he makes it seem like it is not an impossible task! I am very excited to put this practice into my own work!!

A bible for the intellect,virtuoso,and hipster!

Dave Hickey, cuts loose and speaks to the reader in vibrant tones and tempos in his collection of essays on life,drugs,art, and an ideal democracy. Be it a recollection of his childhood growing up with Jazz and joints, his academic years, with Brakhage and Warhol flicks, or his "dealing" days trading a piece of paper with a signature on it for another, Hickey somehow relates the residue of everyday life to Art and Democracy. At times his seductive writing can become so subconciously numbing, that one may want to pinch themselves once in a while to make sure they are not simply ingesting his information as fact...yes his writing is that good, but beware, and be critical!

Another Guest for the Ideal Dinner Party

"Air Guitar" is Hickey's characterization of critical writing, it's direct relationship to its subject(s) being of approximately equal import as a person playing air guitar in his living room is to a rock concert. In the words of Vladimir Horowitz, the concert pianist, it is "the words without the music." That being said, it's damned interesting, all the same, especially when approached this way. Hickey's favorite technique is to take two seemingly disparate things and to discuss the way in which they inform each other, all the while examining the net effect on his life as your basic, educated, ambitious Joe trying to fill the "great gap of time" between birth and death with a mind boggling array of interesting experiences. In this way, they're more 'think pieces' than academic essays. I'll admit, there were moments when my brain hurt; but most of the time, I was enjoying his company and his facility for mental gymnastics -- and the obvious pleasure he took in it personally. I heard of this book on a radio interview (Fresh Air? Diane Rehm Show?) and bought it specifically so that I could have my own personal copy of "My Weimar" -- a spectacular, 'where am I in the grand sceme of things now' type touchstone. Reading the whole book as a part of a recent essay jag, I found it all equally challenging, equally enjoyable.

This book is a collection of essays which demonstrate how art functions in American society on a day to day, experience to experience way. Each essay is written in a conversational tone, as to invite the reader into the story through personnal experience and avoid the frequent erudite, elitist, and exclusionist text commonly associated with art theory. Each story is easy to relate to and encourages one to think about everyday incidences as a form of art and its relation to formal art. This book represents the thoughts of an artist both in what it says and how it says it. It is a thoroughly enjoyable read and educational tool for artists.

Nobility and treachery, life and death everything comes to an end. This is required reading for the for the Dark and the Light

As per usual for the author, you really do not understand exactly what is happening until the last 5 pages. Even then it will help to reread the novel in its entirety to clarify a few things. In this novel Anton has never been more noble and he has never been more treacherous. This is the most perfect ending possible to a story of complicated interweaving stalemates and Machiavellian plots. Everything in the series comes to a head, questions you forgot to ask are answered. This book will remind you that there a somethings worse than death and somethings worth dying for. Also props to the author for turning the book into a cheesy soap opera for two pages at the end of the book and somehow making it work.

gutted this is the last in the series!

Did not realise that there were more in the series than the original 3. Fantastic world that sergei has created, would have loved a (spoiler twist!!!) recreated fuaran to be able to bring it back again, but when its over its over! As well written as any book out of the 'west', amazing to see a totally alternative world centre to the 'normal' used as the focal point for the stories.

Brilliant plotting once again. Each of the previous books expand on the previous book. This one is no different.

But it ends with this now. :(

Anyone know of another author that can PLOT this well, give me recommendations in the comments. PLOTTING, not genre.
