For Advanced Beginners, A Taste of Next Level

If you have taken beginning level Mandarin Chinese, this textbook will give you a taste of what your next level should be without intimidating you. The author Janie Chien is a professional instructor of Mandarin Chinese and has done a fantastic job of filling an important gap in most Chinese textbooks written for western audience. Most American students I know have the same complaint after having two or more years of Chinese classes: they still can't speak Chinese or recognize Chinese characters. This common complaint stems from the fact that many textbooks are published in pure Romanized characters, also known as Pinyin. Even though Pinyin is effective in teaching western students pronunciation of Chinese words, it does not teach character recognition. This means that you can't do simple things like ordering food from a menu in Chinese, or reading shop signs. There are also a handful of textbooks in the market with bi-lingual text (Chinese and English) but, unfortunately, you won't learn how to pronounce any of the words. Janie Chien's Chinese for Everyone corrects this problem because every sentence has literal English translation, Romanized pronunciation guide (Pinyin) and simplified Chinese characters.
Chinese for Everyone is a thin manual with just six chapters - most of them are inspired by real life scenarios:
* Chapter 1: Asking for Directions
* Chapter 2: A Job Interview
* Chapter 3: Talking About Business
* Chapter 4: The New House
* Chapter 5: Chinese Ancient Poetry
* Chapter 6: Longjing - Chinese Green Tea
Except for Chapter 5, all of the Chapters are written in conversational Chinese with real life applications. For those who love culture and idiomatic expressions, the poem in Chapter 5 is a real treat.
I only give this book a four-star rating instead of five because I would have loved to see a thicker volume with more scenarios and more chapters even if it means a higher price. In its current state, Chinese for Everyone gives students a taste but not quite the full entree. My suggestion to the author for the next edition is an expanded three-part volume, perhaps with five to ten chapters for each part, covering (1) business conversations, (2) social conversations and (3) cultural elements such as classic folk tales, humor and poetry.

Handy and comprehensive guide for beginners or anyone else!

This is an excellent guidebook for those who need to quickly acquire proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. The text includes a pinyin guide for pronunciation assistance. It also includes the Chinese characters for those of you who are ambitious enough to memorize characters. Perhaps the ideal reader is someone who plans a trip to China and will need some basic social skills: asking for directions, interviewing for a position, or talking about business contacts and arrangements. There is an extremely helpful section on describing the interior features of homes and apartments. You'll be able to impress your host by suggesting what great taste they have in interior design. Lastly, there are two wonderful sections on Chinese poetry and the art of making tea. Anyone looking for a quick guide to modern Chinese conversation can't do better than to purchase, study and memorize this wonderful book by Professor Janie Chien.

A Must Have for the Mandarin Chinese Student!

A comprehensive review of the subject which includes useful everyday phrases that reflect the way people really talk. Most Chinese text books either have pinyin with the English translation, or Chinese characters with the English translation. What makes this stand out is the fact it includes all three so you can gain a familiarity with the characters at the same time as learning how to speak them and their meaning. I love how the author includes snippets of background information about the country which help put the language into context and bring the learning experience to life. Can't wait to try out my newly acquired vocabulary when I'm next in Chinatown!
