After the maritime plain had been left behind, during the third day's march, the caravan entered a well-wooded country, where in the numerous wadis, mimosa tree and date palm were festooned with luxuriant growth of creepers, while birds of brilliant plumage filled the jungle with life. The game along the route chiefly consisted of gazelle with little sand antelopes, guinea-fowl, and bustards, while at night jackal and hyaena serenaded the camp. At last the Haud was reached, and plenty of larger game, oryx and hartebeest, supplied the camp with meat, and the spoor of lions began to be found. A Somali soon brought news of the brutes themselves, and after a fast ride, Captain Melliss found himself for the first time in the presence of two full-grown lions.

"The absolute bliss of that moment is, of course, indescribable. Here I had two lions, actually waiting for me, all to myself, a vast plain on all sides, clear of jungle as a lawn, not another bush even in sight. I was going to get them—or they get me—that was the only uncertainty in the whole thing." Thus Captain Melliss describes what he considers a perfect situation; and, no doubt, while the freshness of novelty invested them with its glamour, such experiences must have been all that he tells us to one in whom that persistently developed ancestral instinct, the love of sport, is evidently found in its utmost intensity. Captain Melliss's simplicity or crudeness of writing is not without its merit, producing, as it does, the impression of veracity, of mere accurate reporting without the slightest striving after effect. One of his two first lions was black-maned—"a rich black on the shoulders, with bright deep yellow on the head and cheeks "—the other had a rich brown mane with a shade of red in it. The lions were quickly skinned, and the skins, with the great heads and paws intact, tied behind a couple of horsemen. A man may be permitted to break into rhapsody over his first day's lion shooting, and our author does so without hesitation or apology. "What a ride back was that over the breezy rolling ban! I shall never forget the pleasure of it. What a paradise the country seemed as my eyes wandered from the two great heads at the cruppers to the wild herds scattered over the plain! The Somalis, too, rejoiced. Men, women, and children flocked out from their zarebas to gaze at and touch the lions' head. It was after a very bad day's work, in which several antelopes were wounded but nothing brought to bag, that there commenced a run of luck with lions that may be fairly described as extraordinary. To begin with, two little lion cubs were captured and kept in the camp after the lioness had been shot, and, after waiting unsuccessfully a few days for the lion, Captain Melliss moved to a jungle not far from the mountains, a spot where he remained the rest of his leave. The first thing the party came upon, as they rode into this jungle, were two lionesses and two cubs. The lionesses were brought to bay and shot, one of them charging to within a few yards of the sportsman, and after a struggle the savage young cubs, much older and larger than the first •captured, were mastered. The history of the Guinea Pig Club, the band of airmen who were seriously burned in airplane fires, is a truly inspiring, spine-tingling tale. Plastic surgery was in its infancy before the Second World War. The most rudimentary techniques were only known to a few surgeons worldwide. The Allies were tremendously fortunate in having the maverick surgeon Archibald McIndoe – nicknamed ‘the Boss’ or ‘the Maestro’ – operating at a small hospital in East Grinstead in the south of England.

McIndoe constructed a medical infrastructure from scratch. After arguing with his superiors, he set up a revolutionary new treatment regime. Uniquely concerned with the social environment, or ‘holistic care’, McIndoe also enlisted the help of the local civilian population. He rightly secured his group of patients – dubbed the Guinea Pig Club – an honored place in society as heroes of Britain’s war.

For the first time official records have been used to explain fully how and why this remarkable relationship developed between the Guinea Pig Club, the RAF and the Home Front. First-person recollections bring to life the heroism of the airmen with incredible clarity.

This book speaks to two of the most diametrically opposed yet mutually supportive aspects of war: the ability to inflict horrific injury and the ability to heal. Mayhew also includes in her narrative an in depth bibliography and a reading/video list of timely and pertinent on the success of the Guinea Pigs and their continued activities. Mayhew is to be commended on an outstanding addition to expanding our knowledge of an area rarely discussed by historians. Her book should be mandatory reading for all defence members (both civilian and military) and on everyone's history shelf. This book is highly recommended. Airforce Magazine

I thought it was pretty decent. I would have liked to have it go into more depth around the medical end of it, after all, this was leading edge technology at the time and McIndoe was the pioneer. Interesting read regardless.

About the Author
Ran Libeskind-Hadas is the R. Michael Shanahan Professor of Computer Science at Harvey Mudd College, USA, working in the areas of algorithms and computational biology. He is a recipient of both the Iris and Howard Critchell Professorship and the Joseph B. Platt Professorship for teaching, as well as the Distinguished Alumni Educator Award from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Department of Computer Science.

Eliot Bush is Associate Professor of Biology at Harvey Mudd College, USA. His main research interest is the study of evolution. Among other things he has modeled the evolution of metabolism, characterized DNA methylation patterns in insects, developed algorithms for studying substitution bias in DNA, and analyzed a 30-million-year-old primate fossil. His teaching interests focus on incorporating computers and programming assignments into biology coursework.

Incredible Book!

I am through most of Part I of the book, along with all of the exercises, and I must say that so far I could not be more impressed. It is one of the best programming books I have ever read, and it should be a treasure for any biology student interested in acquiring programming skills. Programming students who would like to see applications to biology will also find it invaluable. The book is worth the price for Part I alone. I am looking forward to reading and working through the rest, and I commend the authors for this contribution to science and computing education.
