After completing a residency in internal medicine/pediatrics and using many other sources to decide on renal drug dosing I have been most delighted with the introduction to this one at the beginning of my nephrology fellowship. Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Th is book focuses on two incidents that seem to have influenced Martin Luther King, Jr., in his adult life and work. The first involved white neighborhood children who were forbidden to play with him after they began to attend different schools. The second occured when he and his father were asked to move to the rear of a shoe store to obtain service. After King's parents explained that these inequities were caused by segregation, he promised to work to change the laws. His life is summarized only in terms of his speaking and leading marches, and a final page describes the holiday that is named in his honor. The book never mentions King's assassination and only the use of the past tense indicates that he is no longer living. Bond's full-color paintings are realistic and add interest with their vintage vehicles and examples of "white only" signs. While young children may find the concept of segregation easier to understand when exemplified by stories about another child, these two incidents have been included in many other biographies. The book is easy to read, with some fictionalized dialogue. It contains little factual information--not even King's birthdate--so it is virtually useless for reports. Better choices are David A. Adler's A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Holiday, 1989) or Linda Lowery's Martin Luther King Day (Carolrhoda, 1987). --Jean H. Zimmerman, Willett School, South River, NJ

I've had this book for years and always have used it as a story starter with my young students in January to introduce Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.through a young child's eyes…as the story opens with Martin as a young kindergarten aged child…it also lends to introducing Black American History Month theme.

Good for the very young

The School Library Review is correct in that little biographical information is given, but that isn't the point of this book. It is about how a little boy responded to injustice with love. It can precipitate a nice discussion among preschoolers to second-graders about choices and how to react when things are truly unfair. I think this book is easy for little ones to relate to, especially if this is the first they've heard of MLK.

I was sent a copy of Cults: In Too Deep From Jonestown to Scientology to review. Anything that is out of society's norm is fascinating, and there is probably enough information and books on cults out there to fill its own library. But most people don't want read just about one cult unless they have a personal connection to that one. The Lighting Guide on Cults gives you a top down view of the different cults over the century and what they're about. Not only does it cover the cults themselves, but the book goes into what draws people to cults, the type of people they target, the methods people use to recruit and the history of different cults. The book is only 117 pages, but gives you a lot of information in the small media on how some ideologies can go from religion to controlling structures.

Very informative and interesting!

For such a little book, it is surprisingly informative! It of course includes all of the most famous cults that we are all familiar with like the Manson family, Heavens Gate, Jim Jones and The Peoples Temple, etc..., but it also includes many I have never heard of! Raelism, The Brethren, and Eckankar are just a few of the cults that it hit on that were unknown to me. Also included are well known belief systems that many may not realize are considered cults, like Scientology which has a huge following! I was very surprised to learn that there are over 2,000 cults in existence today! It touches some on what causes people to join a cult, as well as the fact that most cult leaders seem to have a narcissistic personality. These men, and even some women, have talked thousands of people into believing they are prophets or somehow know secrets of the universe that others don't! As we have seen play out, this often has dire consequences! From cults that are offshoots of established religions, to ones that worship aliens or other grand illusions, this book touches a little on all of them! Definitely an informative read for anyone interested in what could drive someone to lead or follow a cult!
