You'll need a lot of practice, but these are capably rendered

To begin with, I think it's admirable that this book has so much music in it. I adore the LOTR soundtrack books, but they have fewer songs. This book is comparatively mammoth with 81 pages of music.
Compared to the LOTR songbooks, these songs are generally much harder to play. I can trip right through most of the LOTR songs and didn't need very long to learn them, but these will take me much more practice. You won't exactly find difficult flourishes like the work of classical composers, but I definitely advise beginners to go for the simplified arrangements (which are available in a separate book). There are some notations here that aren't for the weak-stomached (for one thing, the tremolo is common in some songs), and many chords require finger stretches and keen hand/eye coordination. If you're at a proficient intermediate level, you should find the challenges just about right. The problem here is, of course, that the easier piano book has fewer songs in it. If you're uncertain which level is appropriate, you almost have to just buy multiple books and judge for yourself. Perhaps it's wise to learn the easier arrangements first and move up to the standard arrangements once you're comfortable with the basic ones.
A bright point is the delightful "Dreaming of Bag End," which any intermediate player should have no trouble learning (there is some repetition to make it easier, but also the set of playing skills needed is just plain different than the other songs). It would be equally appropriate at the end of a piano recital and during a quiet moment of reflection at dusk. It feels like a natural transition to/from the LOTR songs, and this is more of the Howard Shore we know and dearly love!!!!
One complaint: the non-English lyrics have been dumbed down and were partially phoneticized. I am assuming this is to help out choir members who have never sung in Tolkien's languages, but this is still irritating after seeing the excellent lyric transcriptions in the LOTR songbooks (which were not simplified).
Despite the recycled paper, the ink bleeding in this book is minimal. The printing job is also very clear and crisp (at least in my particular copy). I do miss the off-white lightweight cardstock of the LOTR folios, but times are changing and manufacturing costs for everything are going up. Beggars can't be choosers, and I would certainly prefer this book to no book at all. Definitely worth buying, but beginners/intermediates will have to be patient with these songs.

There and Back Again...with Music!

Fans of the Lord of the Rings will (hopefully) be at least somewhat familiar with Howard Shore's powerful musical score. Around ten years later, he returned to score The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. While he borrowed some music from the previous trilogy (I was so glad he did!), most of it is brand new music.
So here is my list of pros and cons...
PROS:
*Includes 14 songs ("My Dear Frodo" "Old Friends" "An Unexpected Party" "Axe or Sword?" "Misty Mountains" "The Adventure Begins" "Radagast the Brown" "Warg-scouts" "A Good Omen" "Song of the Lonely Mountain" "Dreaming of Bag End" "A Very Respectable Hobbit" "Erebor" and "The Dwarf Lords" Out of these, "My Dear Frodo" "Old Friends" and "A Very Respectable Hobbit" include music from the previous trilogy
*Includes a personal note from composer Howard Shore
*Includes 6 pages of colored photos and 1 black-and-white photo
*Music is easy enough to enjoy right away, but hard enough to prove a challenge
*Includes nearly every song from the film
CONS:
*Although I paid $15-$16 for this, the list price is $20. I would not pay $20 unless you are a big fan of The Hobbit, Tolkien's works, or Howard Shore.
*A couple of the songs, though good songs, are not as iconic and enjoyable as the others ("Axe or Sword?" and "The Dward Lords" are great to play, but not as great as the other 12 songs...)
If you are a fan of the movies, a fan of Howard Shore, or enjoy movie soundtrack music, I would recommend this for you. If you are a beginner at piano, you will want to look for the less expensive book arranged by Dan Coates (this has less songs, though).

Excellent arrangment for solo piano!

I bought this book after seeing the movie and after playing the Lord of the Rings trilogy piano collection. This is definitely NOT a book for beginning piano players, as the chords are often very difficult. However, it is an excellent collection of songs for intermediate-advanced pianists. The chords and melodies make you feel like you're a part of the movie. Great arrangements, and a good purchase. The only thing this book was lacking was the main fighting theme for the dwarves (the Misty Mountain song but the fight-scene arrangement). Maybe that will be included in the books for the next two movies.
