The Classic Ten: The True Story of the Little Black Dress and Nine Other Fashion Favorites, by Nancy MacDonell Smith

Nancy MacDonell Smith explores the origins, meaning, and remarkable staying power of the ten staples of feminine fashion:
* the little black dress
* the white shirt
* the cashmere sweater
* blue jeans
* the suit
* high heels
* pearls
* lipstick
* sneakers
* the trench coat
Tracing the evolution of each item from inception to icon status, she reveals the history and social significance of each, from the black dress's associations with danger and death to the status implications of the classic white shirt. Incorporating sources from history, literature, magazines, and cinema, as well as her own witty anecdotes, Smith has created an engaging, informative guide to modern style.

From Publishers Weekly
Smith's endearing and quirky book centers on colorful myths, historical facts, meanings, methods and many other allures surrounding 10 wardrobe basics. The stars here are the little black dress, the suit, the cashmere sweater, the white shirt, the high heel, the trench coat, blue jeans, pearls, lipstick and sneakers. MacDonell Smith, the fashion news and features director at Nylon magazine, chose these items for their glamour and simplicity. Her analysis ranges from the historically-based ("The most potent permutation of white-shirt innocence was the version worn by schoolgirls... young, naïve, virginal") to the celebrity-based (Isabella Rossellini on suits: "Men's suits... are incredibly comfortable and sexy"). It's a cute idea, although the book tends to get bogged down by too much text and not enough art. Sidebars and photos are conspicuously absent, and only die-hard fashionistas may have the ambition to persevere through the entire work.

Just how DID these classics come into our fashion vocabulary?
By overtakenbyanap
Why do these Ten (and I agree it could have been more) classic items figure in almost every list of basics for anyone wanting to dress well?

This book answers the question and gives a thumbnail sketch of fashion history, tracing the evolution of each item as it became a classic.

This is a great book, glad I bought it, the writing is fresh easy and interesting, and each chapter holds it's own.

I'd happily buy another book by this author, especially if she chooses to write about some of the other classics that didn't make her first ten.

Enjoyable, informative and surprising
By Deb Nam-Krane
While I would still qualify this as "light" reading, it's an intelligent read about a subject some have written off as too inconsequential and that others have elevated to deadly seriousness. This book strikes a nice balance, coming from the point of view that our clothing says a lot about us, whether we are conscious of it or not.

While I appreciated the author's writing style and observations (I burst out laughing when she described wannabe hip hop fans in pursuit of the perfect sneaker as foot fetishists), she didn't go out of her way to be too clever or witty (although she did quote quite a few people who arguably do, especially the designer- Manolo Blahnik?- who declares that it's all about extremities and the rest of the body is boring. Okay...) In the ten main chapters, the book provides a history of the evolution and a commentary on the social significance of each of the classic ten style items, almost all of which are interspersed with personalities who embodied the spirit of the item. (It should be noted that Audrey Hepburn and Coco Chanel made an appearance in almost every chapter. Where would modern fashion be without them?)

Some points that will stay with me: the seventies/early eighties trend towards natural and the cosmetics executive who bragged about her skill applying twelve different products to achieve the natural look; the evolution of the men's suit to embody the Greek (Greco-Roman) ideal of the perfect body; the foot fetishisms that seem to inform so many footwear designs (and a deplorable ad by Apostrophe involving fetishism and murder- remind me not to buy any of their shoes!).

While I couldn't argue with her choices, I found it odd that she did not include black boots or the perfect scarf in her list. That may have pushed her over the all-important number ten, but since she sort of cheated in her discussion of the white shirt (which refers to both the button down version and the T-shirt), I think she should have found a way. But that's a very minor complaint.

If you're interested in fashion history and modern dress, this will be an enjoyable read.

Lots of fun and familiar
By A Customer
It's hard to find good, lively fashion writing that's geared to the consumer -- not just to the elite insiders working in the fashion industry. This book fills a need for the everyday fashionista who loves to read intelligent copy about clothes, especially the classics already in her closet. The author knows her subject and her affection is contagious.
There's nothing much new here, but still, it's loads of fun to rehash. Reading these essays, I had a vague sense that I'd read some of the material in several other places by several other authors -- such is the familiarity of the Little Black Dress, for example. (Everyone wants to own the LBD and every fashion writer in America has written about it. Ditto the trench coat.)
But don't let that spoil the fun and romance of this delightfully fun read! It's a great little tribute to the classics, and deserves a place on your nightstand.

Cold Fusion, by Harper Fox

Their love is the catalyst that could save the planet...or cost their lives. As an environmental activist for Peace Warrior, Kier Mallory never hesitated to throw himself into dangerous situations. Until his hotheadedness costs the lives of two fellow crewmembers on an anti-whaling mission. He finds no refuge in his hometown on Scotland's north coast, where everyone knows what this son of a broken fisherman has done. Effectively homeless, Mal returns to one of his favorite places-Spindrift, a rustic colony of artist and crafter huts. Spindrift is dilapidated and empty, save for a lone resident. Vivian Calder, a brilliant but emotionally detached scientist who appears to have done the impossible-mastered cold fusion. A clean, free, limitless source of power. Despite Viv's aversion to contact, a fragile bond forms between them, seemingly one atom at a time. Until Mal, determined to redeem himself by revealing Viv's accomplishment to the world, brings down the wrath of an oil-dependent establishment, risking not only their love, but Viv's life. Warning: Contains a disgraced environmentalist and an autistic genius who go from strangers to lovers-for-life in thirteen days. Don't believe in miracles? We'll make you.

Really liked this book!
By kara
Keir is a environmental activist who makes a decision that costs the lives of two of his crewmembers.
Vivian is autistic so he does not like contact from other people but he is also a brilliant scientist who has mastered cold fusion.

Now I loved the authors pretense of this story and I really liked the way this author wrote this story and some of the characters in this book. But I have to be honest and say I was not a huge fan of Keir's characters for a lot of this book. The way he treats Vivian through a lot of this book was just wrong and it did make it harder for me to like his character at first. But he did end up growing on me after awhile. Now Vivian's character I loved and I thought the author did such a awesome job writing his character.

With this story you get a lot of action, some angst and some steam too.

This story line was very different than any book I have read before and I have to say I really did love what the author did with this story. I do not want to give away any spoilers because this book you really need to read for yourself it was just so good. So I will leave this review with...

All together I really liked this story and would recommend this book!
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.

Everything is extreme
By traveller
Though the bare bones of the story could have been ok, and the author normally writes well, everything was "too".
It was too much. Everything happened too fast. There were too many similes. The drama and resolution were too extreme. The descriptions and wording were too florid and poetic. Mallory was too gullible, too stupid, too clueless, too self centered, too reviled, too rejected, too alone. (Which mostly just engendered indifference to him). He was written as too much of an emotional boy at 25, while Cressida was too mature for a sheltered 18 year old schoolgirl. She was described as a lioness too many times. Alan was too obvious, too transparent, and his storyline too predictable, except for the end, which was nonsense. The second act in the cottage was unlikely and the sex so non-stop. So many plot holes: If Vivian inherited the money and assets and Cressida the land, how is she then the investor and benefactor, why would the oil companies take a break from trying to kill him for solving cold fusion? And, Mallory's last scene with Alan and its aftermath is the most preposterous of all (and it was hard to top that third act!). I was just wtf and shaking my head by the end. It seemed like just a bunch of over the top random plot points a student might throw together for an assignment. Which makes me wonder if it was just a formula project designed to appeal to a specific target audience.

A romping plot, characters to genuinely care for and wonderful lyrical prose - there’s nothing better than that.

Sally: I was absolutely delighted to pick up Cold Fusion by Harper Fox recently and even more delighted when Mark said he was reading it too and how about a ‘buddy read’. Of course I jumped at the chance and we spent a happy few days squeeing to each other. What did you think, Mark? Harper’s use of language is what makes me pick up her books, no matter the subject matter, but with this one - oh my the suspense!!

Mark: Well, I must admit Sally that Harper had me on the edge of my seat with this great book. As soon as I had read chapter one I knew this book was not going to be put aside easily. WOW! It starts off at a cracking pace and really doesn’t let up. We have everything here from intrigue, assassination attempts, science which would be nice if it wasn’t fiction even by today’s standards and above all two absolutely adorable characters that I fell in love with as soon as they appeared on the page.

Sally: Kier Mallory is a marvellous protagonist and a terrific POV character with a poet’s eye. This was great because Harper’s prose often reads like poetry but with Kier’s muse being allowed to peep out from time to time his point of view was so richly described. Seen through his eyes no wonder Vivian is such a compelling, and loveable, character. I really liked some of the others too.

Mark: Kier, oh yes! Harper’s narrative style does it for me all the time. Kier for me was such a study in contrast. Deep down in his heart he wants nothing more than to save the planet as if by doing this he can right all the wrongs and injustices of the world including his own. A fighter and yet insecure. After we read about his parents and family background especially his father it’s amazing how he ever rose above those things and became the man he is. But despite the odds he has turned out to be a wonderful person if maybe a little misguided in his intentions occasionally and enthusiasm to do good. I love how Harper seems to lift her characters off the page and brings them to alive. It's as though while I'm reading they really exist for me. Anyway, enough about Kier, what did you think about Vivian Sally? I think you’d better start because I could write a whole sonnet dedicated to this adorable character.

Sally: Vivian actually reminded me of a friend I had way back in the 70s. His mind set was very different to Vivian’s but it was equally gifted and almost as quirky. He was working on the early versions of computer code and it was clear he was always making the effort to slow his thought processes to the point that averagely intelligent people could follow. I remembered my friend and how when he was tired or had had a drink or two he used to lose control of his tongue and talk a mile a minute answering his own questions. Sherlock on speed. Vivian although quieter seemed to make so much effort to get onto Kier’s wavelength and his occasional slips were either adorable or heartbreaking, and sometimes both. I finished reading Cold Fusion a couple of weeks ago but I still think of Vivian, and his very specialised competencies, a lot.

Mark: When I first met Vivian I made the usual assumptions that anyone who is that brilliant has to be eccentric but oh my how wrong I was. When I learnt about his condition and what he is dealing with my heart just went out to him. It's as though for all the genius he possesses there is a price to pay for it too and despite all his intelligence he is so innocent and naive in a lot of ways. Harper has created a wonderful character that anyone can fall for instantly and will not let go of the reader for a long time after the book is finished. As with you Sally he still lingers on in my thoughts and I guess will for a while longer too. Here Harper has created two remarkable characters, although very different are also symbiotic. They are beautiful and compliment each other perfectly. With all this said she then drops them in situation and a run for their lives. I know you said to me you finished the book with your heart pounding and your pulse racing, what was it that made you feel that way?

Sally: There was this spiral of impending disaster. With the benefit of the clarity of vision afforded to readers we could look across to the next loop on the spiral and think “oh sh**, I really don’t think that’s a good idea” but the poor, poor protagonists are set in their course. Luckily Harper always puts in moments of calm and grace, and humour too, so a reader can catch their breath before the next crisis. It just takes me a bit longer these days :D and I always fall for red herrings.

How about you? Did you have to put it down and go and have a walk around the house to calm down too?

Mark: Oh I know what you mean. I had more the problem of not wanting to put it aside! Any interruption was not taken lightly by me while immersed in this read. Even my hubby got the message – lol! As I said at the beginning the book starts off at a cracking pace and it’s not long before foul play is suspected. The red herrings were fun I don’t know if I fell for them like you did but I do know they kept me on my toes with the next twist in the story for sure. For me the story was sandwiched or nicely spread out after the action you get a nice sedate pace where you think everything is OK and then BAM, you’re knocked for six with the next surprise and you’re off and running with Vivian and Kier; pulse and heart racing with them all the way. I liked that at the beginning they both in their own way are trying to save the planet and all the excitement that it brings with it but by the end they have just found a niche for themselves where they can be happy and contented with each other even if the rest of the world goes to hell in a handbasket. But I’m sure it won’t be long before they are out there trying to make the world a better place again. A wonderful piece of story plotting to keep the reader places to breathe and calm down before switching up the adrenaline levels once again. I can recommend this book highly to anyone and I’m sure they’ll not be disappointed in what a treat Harper has delivered with this book. I loved it and even now still thinking off and on about Viv. I can’t see there could be a second book currently but I wouldn’t mind to read more from Kier and Viv anyway if the opportunity should ever present itself. Anyway, over to you now Sally for the final word.

Sally: We ought to let Harper have that don’t you think. Here’s a quote from when Keir has returned to a place where he was once happy:

"In summer the hut had sheltered a fringe of yellow poppies, and these were still here too after a fashion. A strange whisper-music was rippling over the turf. I listened, closing my eyes.

The dry brown poppy chambers lend

A temporary larynx to the wind.

Who had written that? I dug through my memories of poems and poets, but nothing came back, and out of habit I pulled a scrap of paper from my ruckie’s front pocket and scribbled the words down. Once I saw them in my own handwriting, it slowly sank in with me that they weren’t a memory at all. They were my words, new ones, forged here on the anvil of the sand."

A romping plot, characters to genuinely care for and wonderful lyrical prose - there’s nothing better than that.

Mark: Amen!

Fantastic Primer on Perspective Drawing.
By Jason Cox
This is a fantastic reference for anyone who desires to learn the basics of sketching in perspective. Perspective drawing is the key focus on this book, but it also does a good job at showing how perspective in your drawing compares to scenes in reality.

There are other books out there that teach things that are shown well in this book, but the thing that I think makes this one unique is that it brings so many different aspects of perspective, sketching, and object design together in one place. And while it doesn't include every technique available to a designer or artist, this explains a tremendous toolset that you'll be able to use (very quickly!) to produce most anything you can imagine. Isn't that the goal?

The quality of the book is fantastic (I got the "paperback" version) with some of the thickest paper of any book I own. Each page is in full color (most publishers would have cut corners as many of the images only include spots of color and the temptation to make it greyscale had to be high).

Also included is a link list to video lessons. There is an upcoming app that will allow you to scan images from many of the pages to trigger the videos, but it's not yet available on iOS or Google Play store (at least it didn't show up as linked from the QR code and separate searches). The link list works with your computer or a tablet. I'll update this review when the app becomes available.

If you are unfamiliar with Scott Robertson, I highly recommend searching for him in YouTube. I've been following him for years and have 7 of his drawing, rendering, and designing DVDs from the Gnomon workshop. This book and the videos is a nice companion to those, but much less expensive! (Those DVDs were $30 each). Even with that background, I'm very happy with Scott's latest book.

LOVE this book
By Stephen Glasgow
LOVE this book. I bought it because I wanted to expand on what Scott teaches in his videos, but when I got it I realized that it is more valuable than any book I got in college. The perspective lessons alone make it worth the price of admission so to speak. The other night I was trying to figure out a particularily complicated angle/foreshortening problem. After I was about ready to give up, I flipped through the book and used Scott's techniques to work it out. Can't recommend this enough. Anyone who wants to get better at technical drawing - sci-fi or otherwise - would do well to making this part of their reference library.

Wow, packed with information!
By Farious
When i first got it, i was shocked to see how thick it was. More pages than i thought, seems very thorough of the subject.
I skimmed through the pages, and boy you can tell so much effort is put into this.
It may be difficult to grasp, but you have to reread and take your time trying to understand - you will get it eventually.
The book have many sketches with guidelines, so you have to train yourself to be able to "read" what/how he did it (naturally as you read the book) in order to learn each lesson.
The most amazing aspect of the book is that some section of the book have a video to go with it (online url/link or through electronic scan with ipad or something). It will show and explain certain things much clearer, so i recommend you watch the videos as well.

I was skeptical about it being $34 (on sale too), but after seeing how much information it provides, it is certainly worth it.
Glad i bought the hardcover as well, this is a great entry in my collection of fundamental drawing books.
