"He was writing in a void," explains British scholar Graham Robb. "In 1876, most of Rimbaud's admirers either were still in the nursery or had yet to be conceived." Hardly surprising, since the poet was a difficult and frequently unpleasant person to actually know. The Parisian poets who took him under their wing soon discovered that Rimbaud was ungrateful, crude, and as scornful of their precious verse as he was of the Catholic Church, bourgeois proprieties, and everything else his disapproving mother held dear. Rimbaud's stormy affair with Paul Verlaine estranged the older poet from his wife and, eventually, from most of his artistic friends as well. In Robb's depiction, the poet possessed from his earliest youth a restless, searching intellect that permitted no compromise with convention nor tenderness for others' weaknesses. The author doesn't soften Rimbaud's "savage cynicism" or gloss over his frequently obnoxious behavior, yet Robb arouses our admiration for "one of the great Romantic imaginations, festering in damp, provincial rooms like an intelligent disease." Like Robb's excellent biographies of Hugo and Balzac, this sharp, subtle, unsentimental portrait is both erudite and beautifully written. --Wendy Smith

Biographer's genius matches the subject...

Graham Robb has presented a biography of Ribauld that one intuitively recognizes as accurate and defining. The sense of the man is clearly conveyed in writing that often matches the work of Ribauld himself.
Even though I will most likely never be able to fully appreciate Rimbauld's work myself, I enjoyed this biography as if I were a Rimbauld scholar. Somehow, the sense of Ribauld's brilliant and horrifying life is inescapably presented and I became absolutely absorbed in the story unfolding before me.
I highly recommend this book to anybody thinking of reading it - you won't be dissapointed.

Rimbaud remains a mystery

We know for certain that Athena sprang from the head of Zeus fully armored. But from where did Rimbaud spring? His mom was authoritarian and did her best to stifle his quest for knowledge (although, alone, she fed, clothed and housed him, as well as sending him to school); his dad, an officer, left the family when the boy was six, leaving behind enough writings to suggest a man of intelligence. His school counted on HIM for honors and prizes, the first in its mediocre existence. Photos of the boy range from drop-dead gorgeous to a girlish slut. He was said to be `a vile, vicious, disgusting, smutty little schoolboy,' who had left, as a parting gift, a turd on the pillow of a friend. His lover was an old man of whom he said he `'f----- me all night long, and now I can't keep my sh--in. He wants me to practice on him but he's far too filthy.''
Since the beginning of the world one of the hallmarks of boys is that they often make disastrous decisions, thanks to which we have skydivers, a legless boy who runs in the Olympics and world records of all kinds constantly shattered. Who knows why Rimbaud decided to go to Abyssinia, a land of murder, slavery, war, pestilence and famine, about which he wrote, `'I'm forced to speak their gibberish, to eat their filthy food and suffer a thousand aggravations caused by their idleness, treachery and stupidity.' He went as an arms salesman and made it back home rich, to die from the same hereditary disease that killed his sister. Graham Robb's RIMBAUD is beautifully written, the poems beautifully translated (I'm French), and so interesting that I read through it in just 3 days (at 550 pages, it's rather big). Because I'm personally incapable of judging Rimbaud's poetry, you'll have to arbitrate his historical impact. My own books can be found on Amazon under Michael Hone.

Absolutely

Even if you don't care about poets or Rimbaud, this book ranks with the best. It's entertaining and funny and smart and I found myself going back and rereading sections because I liked the way they were written. Rimbaud has hundreds of years of anecdotal bull shaping his story. This book acknowledges all of it and forges its own path.
