About the Author
Dr Wendy Lawson PhD received her diagnosis of autism spectrum at the age of 40. As a writer, poet and adult educator, Wendy is well known in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, and was awarded fourth place in the 'Australian of the Year' awards in 2008. Becoming a psychologist and sharing her knowledge, understanding and experience of life, including of autism and Asperger's diff-abilities, is an ongoing journey that Wendy welcomes. Wendy has written many books and numerous papers on the topic of the autism spectrum, and currently works as a writer, researcher, adult educator, and sessional lecturer at a number of universities, including Melbourne University, and as a distance education tutor for The University of Birmingham, in the UK.

A bridge to understanding differences between autistic and normal thinking

While it is somewhat technical at times, I think that the idea she presents in this book is very important. Being someone with Aspergers syndrome, I find that her explanation of single focused attention (she has created the acronym SAACA) being the main difference between those on the spectrum and those not, to very well describe my situation.

I think that she is attempting to create an understanding between the neurotypical world and the autistic world. She is attempting to get rid of the stigma associated with autism to help the rest of the world understand that it is really just a different way of viewing life. And I think she accomplishes this.

I would recommend it to both those on the spectrum, as well as others who just want to understand their autistic friends or children. It gives an important framework for understanding what autistic thinking and behavior is all about. This is obviously useful for someone on the spectrum, but also for those who may struggle to relate to them. The book is somewhat technical at times though, sometimes having more technicality than I wanted to read. I think that the reason for this, though, is she was trying to provide a comprehensive overview of her theory, as compared to other theories in the field. But perhaps if you keep this in mind when reading, you can get through it and understand her main focus.
