Good Beginner's Book But Not So Musical

Although these studies are targetted for the beginners, some pieces aren't very musical, which may make the process of practising less enjoyable. However, the variety of basic fingerings and position-shifts does make it a good starting book for beginners.

On target!

A colleague gave me this book 15 years ago and I have found it immensely helpful ever since. I generally consult this I Ching whenever I am in a transition or under stress and want some wise advice. Six throws of 3 pennies and I am on my way to excellent guidance. I am so glad that R.L. Wing took the time to give such a pleasant and easy to use version of a very complex oracle. I have shown others how to consult this I Ching and have bought many copies for friends. This book has given me an education in life, relationships and the way this world works--it is full of basic truths to live by. My copy is almost falling apart from hard use!

By far the best I-Ching translation ever. RL Wing has captured the true essence of the I-Ching and has made it possible for anyone to understand. Thousands of years have gone by since the original writing and diagrams in this book were drawn, but the effect they still have today is as profound as the day they were made. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

I own both this one and the I Ching Workbook and they are practically the same book, though this one doesn't have the spiral binding (which you'll need because you'll open it so much) but has the most beautiful, meditative paintings on each hexagram. The pictures give you a profound inner sense of the truth of each throw of the coins, transforming the experience into a deeply effective tool for inner growth. Not to be confused with the Art of War or the Tao Te Ching, the I Ching focuses mainly on political relationships and the development of character as one navigates one's way through professional and personal relationships. The main thing you'll get from using the I Ching is, to learn which situations you can definitely change and which ones you should just let pass. It also shows you where you are in the development of goals and what to prepare yourself for, as you go on. Start with one question, and when you read the answer, if you have deeper questions, ask them too. You'll get amazing answers.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE AZTECS. THIS BOOK PROVIDES AN INTERESTING AND MORE BALANCED ACCOUNT OF THE RISE AND FALL OF THE AZTEC EMPIRE. MR.KOCH TAKES THE READER ON A JOURNEY THAT PROVIDES BETTER INSIGHT INTO THE MOTIVATIONS OF BOTH THE AZTECS AND THE SPANIARDS TO DOMINATE THE LANDS OF MEXICO.

Great story sloppily told

There is no denying that Peter O. Koch is a great storyteller. His newest historical novel is easy to read and offers interesting theories of the motives and actions of the main character of the tragic events in Mexico in the early 16th century. Despite the list of notes and consulted literature, it is certainly not a historical study. The author is shockingly inconsist in the spelling of names, not only Aztec names but Spanish ones as well (has the editor been asleep or what?) and his use of sources is dubious. He used William Prescott's more than 150 years old account of the conquest of Mexico as his most trusted source - as if historians have been in limbo for all these years. The second part of the title of his book is simply wrong, because it is not what the book is about. However, all these faults would be acceptable had the author gone through the trouble of studying the story more in depth. In particular his account of the amount of human sacrifices made by the Aztec is not based on facts and a repetition of a lie started by Cortes and his soldiers. If he would have read Peter Hassler's excellent study 'Menschenopfer bei den Azteken', he would probably have developed more sensitivity to the Aztec side of the story. What we are left with is a book that is entertaining but a mere repetition of many of the falsities that have been told in the last five centuries about the Aztecs as a bunch of murderers who seemed to have enjoyed ripping people's hearts out. Opened My Eyes

Super powerful, yet very easy to read. This book is a refreshing and revealing perspective from someone who actually lives what she teaches. It's apparent in her stories, colorful illustrations, and right down to her word choice.

As a fellow introvert, this book opened my eyes to things about myself I never realized. For example, things like noise, house clutter and decision-making are sources that drain my energy. Makes complete sense, but something I had never given given much thought. To truly excel, us introverts must learn to work with the "natural ebb and flow of our energy."

This book helped shape my understanding of my introversion and the world around me. And not only that, it provided practical, actionable exercises.

Extroverts Need This Book, Too

As an extrovert, I haven't bothered reading any of the books or articles about how to deal with being an introvert. And when Michaela Chung came to me for help in reviewing the contract Skyhorse Publishing had sent her, I still didn't feel obligated to read her blog or any of her articles. Skyhorse had asked her to write this book, and my job was to ensure that the contract was fair and protected her interests.

But then I had a signed copy of The Irresistible Introvert in my hands, and felt I should at least read the introduction. It was a revelation. I realized I had little understanding of my many introvert friends, didn't know why they let me talk so much, why they seemed to hesitate before expressing their opinions, and why I was puzzled that they were able to handle large groups of people gracefully despite my labeling them as shy.

I soon found myself reading further. And I urge extroverts to read this book as well, to better understand those around them.

One revelation was that introverts do not fall into strict categories. As Chung says, they are “not timid or vivacious, silly or serious, quiet or courageous.” Introverts are often just as confident as extroverts, but they express it differently.

I have a close friend who is an introvert, but I see her as attractive, confident, extremely capable, and articulate. When we're in a group, she listens attentively as the extroverts dominate the conversation, and only interjects the occasional comment. But when we're alone, she often talks almost as much as I do!

What I've learned from this book is that we extroverts need to give our introvert friends time to assemble their thoughts. As Chung points out, my thoughts form themselves as complete sentences in my head, and tumble out as soon as I have a chance to open my mouth (or my computer). Introverts, on the other hand, take time to process the thought and put it into words.

If you're an introvert, you need this book to help you understand yourself, not allow others to pigeon-hole you, and to bring out what Chung calls your “quiet charisma.”

If you're an extrovert, you need this book to understand some of the important people in your life that you may have underestimated, and not had the patience to listen to.

Insightful and helpful

I really enjoyed this book for the insight and support that it gave me as an 'innie'. Michaela has obviously put a lot of thought into this and the book very accurately describes what it is like to live as an introvert and how other people will treat you because you are introverted. Very informative, and very helpful and as other reviewers have said, this is a good book for extroverts to read as well so that they understand what life is like for their introverted family members and introverted friends. Elaine Aron has said that 15-20% of people are sensitives, or as she puts it highly sensitive people yet about 50% of people that turn up in therapy are sensitives. Introverted sensitives are probably among this group as well and yet as Michaela says, introverts have difficulty talking and often write better than they talk. I was musing as I read Michaela's book and thinking about this therapy aspect and considering how such a large percentage of innies/sensitives end up in therapy, which is usually talk-therapy and considering that innies write better than they talk that maybe write-therapy might achieve better results for this population. Writing down aspects of what is troubling an innie might be easier for them and provide a sound basis for discussion at therapy.

A great book about the Toyota Way. If you read between the lines it's really not about the 14 principles but about people. People are a powerful resource. Treat people right, teach people to think, teach people to care, teach people to be passionate about what they believe in -- do all these things and you can build a great company. Oh, you may build a few cars along the way, too.

I agree that the TPS ought be be all business way for small & large. Excellent read with so much wisdom & insight in the 14 management principles. Learn how to use JIDOKA, POKA-YOKE, HEIJUNKA, 6S, process flow mapping, brainstorming, Gemba! All of these concepts will help you & your organization with Lean and Six Sigma. Remember to question the status quo. Just because it's always done that way, does not mean it's the right or most efficient way. Apply PDCA - plan, do, check act. Oh and read this book!

Memory NoteCARDS are better

I considered giving memory noteBOOK series only 1 stars because I like the memory noteCARD series so much better, but the noteBOOKs really are OK, but *just* OK. They are black and white "coloring book" images of varying degrees of usefulness. I find two types of the images useful -- those with acronym style mnemonics and those that are a big picture summary that includes the causes, signs/symptoms, complications and treatment/care for a particular disease disorder.

I strongly prefer the memory noteCARD format because (1) they are in color and (2) there is additional info and/or explanatory info on the back of each card image. The images are very similar/same as those in the noteBOOK series (in fact, I haven't found a single noteBOOK image that wasn't also included in my friend's noteCARDs and her noteCARDS seem to have images that the noteBOOKS do not have (plus there's extra info on the cards!). FYI - the notecards are NOT in a format that facilitates self-quizzing (as you might do when making flashcards).

Regardless of the format memory noteCARD or memory noteBOOK, the images are somewhat learning-style specific, and often lack large amounts of info that one also needs to learn about the topic depicted, so you may find them to be that helpful. Many (probably all) of the mnemonics can be found (for free!) on popular nursing discussion boards. If you're thinking of purchasing, you would be well-served to check them out in-person at a local bookstore then purchase whichever series you prefer from Amazon.

Good for visual learners

I have 2 of these books and my teachers in nursing school used to pass them out as handouts to go along with the topics we were covering. I am a visual learner and these really help me remember things better. I will always think of the picture of the man with peritonitis, with a "rigid, board-like abdomen" and the basketball bouncing off of his stomach. The pictures really do help things "stick" better for me because I can recall the image in my head. My only complaint about these books is that there are typos. There is incorrect information and typos in them which is frustrating. I wish I could upload a picture as an example...
