The authoritative edition, although English translation is weak.

The text on the back cover reads: "Barenreiter-Urtext is the seal of quality assigned only to scholarly-critical editions. It guarantees that the musical text reflects the current state of research, prepared in accordance with clearly defined editorial guidelines. Barenreiter Urtext: the last word in authentic text -- the musician's choice."
I have sung from many Barenreiter editions of major works, and can agree with this statement. Although I am just a chorister, and not a musicologist, we have never found a mistake in any Barenreiter edition we have sung from.
Having said that, the English translation provided is weak. It is done by Henry S. Drinker, Lawyer, President of Lehigh University, and noted musicologist. However, I would say that the translation is inferior in a number of places. Compare one chorale from the St. John: O grosse Lieb / O Lieb ohn alle Masse / die dich gebracht auf diese Marterstrasse! / Ich lebte mit der Welt in Lust und Freuden / und du musst Leiden!
Drinker translates this: O wondrous love / O love all love excelling / wherefore Thou made this vale of tears Thy dwelling! / The joys and pleasures of the world we cherish / Yet Thou must perish.
Compare to the translation of the great Catherine Winkworth, premier 19th C translator of German hymns into English: O wondrous love / whose depth no heart hath sounded / That brought Thee here, by foes and thieves surrounded! / All worldly pleasures, heedless, I was trying / While Thou wert dying.
The Winkworth translation seems to me both more personal ('I' rather than 'we') and more direct ('that brought' vs. 'wherefore'). 'Marterstrasse' is not directly translated in either, but 'made this vale of tears Thy dwelling' seems to refer to the Incarnation as a whole, rather than the Passion ('..here, by foes and thieves surrounded.')
This is just one example of many where I think that the English translation in the Barenreiter is lacking.
