About the Author
Ed Fuqua is a young, but already seasoned veteran of the NY jazz scene, having gigged with such musicians as Clifford Jordan, Junior Mance, Pete Yellin, Leon Parker, Ron Afif, etc. He studied music at Augusta State University and at Berklee College of Music, as well as studying privately with Joe Solomon, Lennie Tristano's bassist.

very insightful

This book is an excellent "introduction with depth", making it much more than a beginner's instructional book. It reflects the author's considerable experience and knowledge, and brings not only the most basic bassics to light, but also thoughtfully presents more complex techniques and tips that are intriguing also for an intermediate player. I've got a whole collection of about 20 double bass instrucional books, and this one, given its brevity and focus on walking lines, is among the best and most useful. Highly usable and easy to work with, I would recommend it for any bassist wanting to improve their walking lines.

Good, solid instruction!

Well worth the price of one lesson!!!!!
An excellent book showing how to build a solid foundation walking bass line through harmonic progressions.
I've only started this book, but am going through it very slowly so as to completely absorb each idea before moving on to the next.
Fuqua STRONGLY emphasizes HEARING what is going on and learning so completely that you can get your mind out of the way on an intellectual level and actually PLAY what you wish to express.
I am using this book to get past reading chord charts and spontaneously play along with any song/harmonic progression "on the fly". I have done a lot of transcription of melodies and found that tactic to be of not much help. My goal is to hear CHANGES and react musically.

More than jazz

This is an excellent book, and I highly recommend it to any aspiring bass player interested in good bass lines in any genre, not just jazz. Fuqua teaches universal theory and technique for creating tension and resolve and moving voice harmonically, and beat-voice emphasis and motifs rhythmically. With this book, I'm beginning to understand why a bass line sounds good, and how to construct my own when handed a lead sheet or chord progression whether playing jazz, folk, rock, blues, etc.
