“This book is not for the faint-hearted as it takes a serious approach to a serious area of veterinary practise... The name of the book has been changed for this third edition to more accurately reflect its content... the content of some of the chapters has not changed greatly between this and the previous edition; however, the layout and formatting of the text has been updated and this makes the book seem easier to read... A particular strength of this book is that it often contains answers to the questions you want to ask or are asked by colleagues, such as, 'why do you give lactate-containing fluids to animals with lactic acidosis?' Not only does it contain the answers, it explains it in a logical manner so that you can truly understand the meaning. I have not come across any veterinary texts that provide such a depth of understanding on the subject of fluids, electrolytes and acid-base... It is highly recommended for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of these important areas.” The Veterinary Record 6/22/06

I use this all the time as part of my clinical pathology residency-it's much more readable than most of the other texts because it links the pathophysiology to the observed electrolyte imbalance very clearly. The only problem is that it does stick to the subjects in the title-so some other critical care topics (e.g. bleeding disorders) aren't included...but it's well worth the price for the topics covered. Ideal for vets, vet students and residents with an interest in critical care, anaesthesia or medicine-but maybe not applied enough for most nurses or vet techs.

This book is well written and well done. Excellent reference, can help make a lot of difference in patient care. I wish Dr. DiBartola would get more involved with large animal fluid therapy.

Great seller!! Undoubtedly this book is a "must" for fluid therapy and the basis of acid-base disorders are well explained. If I have something to say, it could be the hope that in the next edition the acid-base disorders will be extend!
